We all want to be happy. But what is the power to be happy, and is there a roadmap to a happy life?
The Bible contains God’s instructions for living a life of joy and contentment. As our Creator, God knows us inside and out, and He knows the recipe for a happy life. In Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, chapter 4, we find a roadmap to a life of happiness and satisfaction. Let’s explore this together.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:4-13, NIV)

Decision-making – Our Secret Superpower
This passage shows us that as humans, God has given us a secret superpower. This is our ability to make decisions. We have the power of choice. God has given us control within our boundaries – our decisions, thoughts, emotions, acts, and behavior. Our decision-making greatly contributes to the kind of life we will live and to our happiness and well-being in general.
The decision-making ability is related to the power of the mind and the God-given strength to renew our minds. Saturating our minds with God’s truths and words changes our perspectives, thoughts, emotions, and decisions, and influences our feelings.
We need to know that emotions are fleeting and short-lived, but feelings can be cultivated and long-lasting, including the feelings of happiness and joy.

In the passage above, we find a five-step roadmap to a life of happiness and contentment.
Step 1 – Rejoice
God, through the Apostle Paul, instructs us to rejoice always. But this is a special kind of joy rooted in our relationship with Him. We are to rejoice in the Lord. This means that our joy comes from our connection and fellowship with the Lord, and that He is the source of it. He is the giver of joy, and His Holy Spirit produces it in us as we abide in Him.
The verse tells us one more reason to rejoice – the Lord is near. We can be joyful all the time because we are never alone, and God’s presence and help are available 24/7.
Step 2 – Activate the Peace of God
This is a powerful step. God tells us that we have unrestricted access to His peace, which transcends all understanding and guards our hearts and minds. We receive this peace when we decide to turn our worries into prayers.
When anxiety comes, we can decide to pray and ask our Father for help with thanksgiving. In this way, no worry or trouble can rob us of our joy.
Step 3 – Focusing on the Right Things
Our mental focus plays a big role in being happy and content. God instructs us to focus on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy and to think about such things.
Every time we make a choice to focus our thoughts on such things, we shift into the positive mental space that produces feelings of joy and happiness.
Step 4 – Choosing and Learning to Be Content
The next step shows the power of decision-making again. Basically, the Lord tells us that it is our choice whether we will be content and happy; it depends on us. He has provided everything for us to live a life of happiness and contentment.
But this is something we need to choose and learn. It is not dependent on our circumstances. God encourages us to learn the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether we have what we want or don’t have what we want.
Step 5 – Lean into God’s Power to Do All This
Making good decisions and renewing our minds is good, but we all know very well how difficult it is. We need strength bigger than ours to be happy and cultivate a life of happiness and satisfaction.
The good news is that God makes this power available to us so we can say, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” In Christ, we have the power to make positive changes in our thinking and actions that lead to feelings of long-lasting happiness and contentment.
