In Jeremiah 51:56, God is called with the Hebrew word “El-Gamulot” from “gamul”, meaning “to invest”. The name is translated as God of investments, rewards, returns, and recompense”. In the different Bible translations, we also find it as “God of retribution or just restitution”.

Here is the verse: “For a destroyer has come upon her, upon Babylon; her warriors are taken; their bows are broken in pieces, for the Lord is a God of recompense; he will surely repay.” (Jeremiah 51:56, ESV)

In context, the notion is that the Lord repays humanity’s evil deeds and makes everything right with perfect justice. But this name also refers to repayment and reward in a broader sense. If we have invested in good and love, we will reap good and rewards from the Lord. And if we have invested in evil and sin, we will reap a just retribution.

The Meaning of Investing

The root of this amazing name is “gamul,” which means “to invest”. The meaning of investing in the context of our lives and spiritual growth is to willfully nurture ourselves or others toward productive maturity by means of continued input or infusion. We can notice here 3 main characteristics of investing:

• It is a willful action. This is an intentional, desired, and motivated act.
• It is a continued action of input and infusion. This is not just a one-time event or something sporadic. It speaks about consistency and is habitual in nature.
• It aims for productive maturity. Good investing leads to positive change, growth, and maturity.

An interesting fact: there is a person in the Bible with the name Gamul. He is the 22^nd priest mentioned in 1 Chronicles 24.

Examples of Good and Wise Spiritual Investments

#1 Investing in Doing Good

“Those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.” (John 5:29, NIV)

Here Jesus speaks about the ultimate reward of those who believe in Him and live as true disciples – resurrection and eternal life. Those who have done what is evil will be eternally condemned.

Previously, Jesus explained that a good deed is to believe in the Son of God and in the One Who sent him. Without this fundamental good deed, which is the initial investment of our faith, trust, and life in the Living God, no further investment will be enough.

All our good deeds are to be motivated by our love for God and an intimate relationship with Him. This is our main motivation as followers of Christ, not a desire for rewards. We can be sure that as a just and loving God, He will reward and bless us as He sees fit.

#2 Investing in God’s Kingdom and His Word

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33, NIV)

“But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:2-3, NIV)

Another good and wise spiritual investment is in God’s kingdom and His righteousness. When we make God and His kingdom our first desire, aim, and priority, God promises to take care of all our needs and cares. Investing our lives, energy, and resources in the advancement of His kingdom is truly the most rewarding thing we can do.

And when we invest ourselves in studying and applying God’s truth, the God of recompense promises us a flourishing spiritual life. This is a fruitful and abundant life. Through God’s word, we receive an infusion of truth, wisdom, understanding, power, and love. All these virtues will bring a return of more virtues in our lives.

#3 Investing in the Positive Mental Space

^“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV)

Throughout the day, we jump many times between the negative and positive mental spaces. The negative contains thoughts that are often not true and produce self-condemning feelings, guilt, discouragement, anger, and other negative emotions. On the contrary, when we are in the positive space, we can focus on true thoughts that are in alignment with God’s word, and that also leads to positive emotions like peace, encouragement, joy, and hope.

It is good for us to be aware when we have moved into the negative space and make conscious and continuous efforts to move back to the positive space and stay there. Staying in the positive space will produce a greater measure of growth, freedom, wholeness, and healing.

The Best Investment Is in the God of Recompense

Our best investment of everything we have and are is truly in the God of Investments, Recompense, and Rewards. He is the only one who deserves our everything. And we can live in the joyful expectancy of the wonderful future He has prepared for all who love Him.

“However, as it is written: what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, NIV)
