When Life Doesn’t Feel Good

When life doesn’t feel good, what can we do? A great starting point is to remember several biblical truths about the character of God and His will for our lives.

I woke up on this day with heaviness in my chest and pain I could not put into words. It was one of these days when life didn’t feel good. I had many such days after the unexpected death of my husband a couple of years ago.

Days when I feel hopeless and anxious and I dread the future. I dread even the present because of the loneliness that brings and the painful longing for my husband’s presence. On such days, I tend to doubt God’s goodness and love for me.

What can we do on such days when life doesn’t feel good? Let me share with you 10 biblical truths about why we can still trust God’s goodness.

10 Biblical Truths for When Life Doesn’t Feel Good

#1 God Is Good Even When Life Doesn’t Feel Good

Yes, God is good all the time, even and especially then when life doesn’t feel good. He is good to me; He is good to us. His goodness doesn’t cease because a tragic event has happened to us. God’s goodness is never a before and after.

A practical step to recall God’s goodness is to remember how God showed His goodness to us in tangible ways in the past. We can also pray that God would open our eyes to see signs of His goodness in our present.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1)

#2 God’s Path and Plan for Us Is Good

Do we truly believe that God’s path and plans for us are good doesn’t matter how it feels? Because God is always good, His plans and will for our lives are good and acceptable too. God is leading us on the path of life.

“You reveal the path of life to me; in Your presence is abundant joy; in Your right hand are eternal pleasures.” (Psalm 16:11)

“For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

#3 God Wants to Bless Us no Matter What

God has already blessed us with all spiritual blessings in Christ and He continues to bless us with temporary and eternal blessings during our earthly lives. No event, no tragedy, and no difficulty can stop God from blessing us and transforming us more and more in the image of Christ.

“Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens.” (Ephesians 1:3)

No event, no tragedy, and no difficulty can stop God from blessing us and transforming us more and more in the image of Christ. #encouragement #mentalhealth #blessings Share on X

#4 God Moves Us from Devastation to Restoration

When life doesn’t feel good because we have endured and continue to endure too much suffering, pain and losses, let’s remember that God is in the business of restoration.

His will is to move us from devastation to restoration and from losses to victory.

“Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.” (1 Peter 5:10)

#5 God Always Works Behind the Scenes for our Good

We can take great comfort in the truth that even when we don’t feel it and see it, God always works behind the scenes for our good.

God is the master weaver: He weaves all the different threads of our life in a wonderful tapestry, in a masterpiece. Our pain and suffering are not in vain.

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

#6 Christ Is Enough

When life doesn’t feel good, let’s strengthen our hearts with the truth that Christ is enough. We have everything if we have Christ.

Even if we lose all we have here on earth, we will still have enough because we have Christ and we are in Christ.

“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.” (Psalm 23:1)

“Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone suffices.” (St. Teresa from Avila)

#7 We Have the Best Reason to Live

When we struggle with despair about the unfairness of life, we are in danger of losing our motivation to live. But God’s Word gives us the best motivation.

Since the day of our salvation, we don’t live for ourselves anymore. Instead, we live for God.

“For through the law I have died to the law, so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:19-20)

#8 God Provides All We Need

God is our shepherd and provider, the source of everything good for us. We can get through the most difficult day knowing that God will provide and is providing everything we need to live the abundant life He promised.

What we don’t have, we don’t need now. We can trust God to give us what we need when we need it.

“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

#9 We Are Not Alone and Abandoned

When life doesn’t feel good, it is because we often feel alone and abandoned. But this is not true.

Whether our days feel good or we struggle with devastating loss, we can strengthen ourselves in the truth that God has not abandoned us. He is ruling in all the ways-big and little-and He cares for us.

“Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Whether our days feel good or we struggle with devastating loss, we can strengthen ourselves in the truth that God has not abandoned us. #encouragement #trustGod #Biblestudy Share on X

#10 God Is in Control

The Bible tells us that God is in control, even though our circumstances are shaking.

On bad days, we can choose to trust God’s sovereignty over our lives, and the lives of our loved ones. We can rest in God’s sovereignty, knowing that God reigns and nothing can thwart His good plans and purposes for us.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Choosing to See and Trust God’s Goodness

There will be many days when life doesn’t feel good. But for such days, we have the Bible and its everlasting truths to help us navigate our painful realities and lead us to the joy and peace of the Lord.

Whenever we choose to see and trust God’s goodness, we tear the curtain of heaviness and let the sunlight inside again.

“How great is Your goodness that You have stored up for those who fear You and accomplished in the sight of everyone for those who take refuge in You.” (Psalm 31:19)
