A Song of Obedience and Trust

Do you know that every servant of the Lord is called to sing a song of obedience and trust?

God calls us to sing Him a song with our lives: a song that reveals our callings, anointing, obedience, and hearts of trust. We sing this love song to the Lord and the whole creation.

A Song of Obedience and Trust

We find the model of this song in the Song of the Servant in the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 50. These prophetic words are not only relevant to Isaiah’s ministry, but they also point to the ministry of the Suffering Servant–our Lord Jesus Christ.

They are also relevant for every person who wants to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.

Here are 4 lessons and insights we can glean from the song of obedience and trust based on Isaiah chapter 50:4-9.

The Calling and Mission of the Servant

God has chosen us to be beacons of hope and light in a dark and hopeless world. Today, hopelessness and depression are the greatest oppressors of the human soul.

It is no wonder that the primary calling and mission of God’s servant is to encourage, help, and sustain the weary and discouraged.

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.” (Isaiah 50:4).

Who are the weary, what do they go through, what are their needs?

God has placed us in families, communities, workplaces, and churches where we are surrounded by people who are weary and discouraged. We can ask the Lord to open our eyes to truly see them, discern their needs, and lift their spirits by following God’s lead. Sometimes, all that they need is a smile, a hug, and a kind word.

Our words and prayers are powerful. May they be filled with wisdom, grace, and compassion.

The Equipment and Anointing of the Servant

God has given us an awesome mission as His servants and He has also provided the equipment and anointing to fulfill it. We find a description of a crucial piece of this equipment in verses 4 and 5.

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away.” (Isaiah 50:4-5)

One of the most important instruments God gives His servants to help the weary and bring hope to this world is our words. These are not just our words, but Spirit-filled and Spirit-led words, filled with wisdom and knowledge, and said in a timely and loving manner.

We are called to convey God’s words, but first, we must hear them, pay attention, and embrace them in our hearts and lives. The Lord is willing to open our ears, but are we willing to listen? Do we desire to submit to His instructions and leading?

If we do this and invest ourselves in spending time with the Lord and abiding in His word and Spirit, then we will hear better and will have a well-instructed tongue.

The Preparation of the Servant – Training in Obedience and Humility

In this powerful song of obedience and trust, we find the theme of preparing the servant through facing suffering, affliction, and opposition.

I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.” (Isaiah 50:6-7).

When we also choose to submit to God’s ways, we follow the steps of Jesus, the Suffering Servant, who through suffering, learned obedience and humbled Himself, even to death. (Hebrews 5:8)

In this process of preparation and sanctification, we die to ourselves and learn to put our reputation, identity, hopes, and all of ourselves in the hands of the Lord. Only then can we be pure vessels for honorable usage, useful to our Master, and prepared for every good work. (2 Timothy 2:21)

The Journey of the Servant – a Journey of Trust

As servants of the Lord, we are on a journey of trusting Him with all areas and aspects of our lives, with all our souls, and with our past, present, and future. The Lord invites us every day to this adventure–to know Him more and trust Him more.

In our walk with the Lord, we learn to trust Him as our ultimate Helper and Vindicator, and as the source of our strength, endurance, and resilience.

“He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me. Who will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.” (Isaiah 50:8-9)

The Lord is near, in us, and with us, to help, sustain, carry us through, and satisfy us. That’s why we can sing our songs of obedience and trust, responding to God’s song of love and joining the chorus of all who love Him.
